The Quiet Before the Leap

I stood at the water’s edge, toes sinking into cool sand, listening to the waves.

The rush of water, the rhythm of the wind, even the distant cry of a gull — it all softened the noise that usually fills my head. Prior to retirement it was emails, to‑do lists, schedules, obligations — post-retirement it was obligations, the health of everyone in my family, do I have enough money to retire. They faded into the background. For two months, this quiet became my companion.

Those weeks were a gift I hadn’t anticipated: space to think, space to breathe, space to just be. Without the usual push and pull of life, I could finally hear the little voice I often ignore — the one that whispers, “Why not?” or, better yet, “Why not now?”

It was in those moments of reflection, standing with the ocean lapping at my feet, that clarity began to settle in. The noise didn’t vanish entirely, but I learned to notice it and then let it drift away, like leaves floating on the surface of the water. And in that stillness, I realized I had a choice.

I could wait. Or I could leap.

The leap wasn’t dramatic — no fireworks, no fanfare. It was quiet and deliberate. It was the kind of leap that comes when you’ve listened long enough to trust yourself. And suddenly, the idea that had been stirring in my mind for months — my new venture, my creative spark, my next chapter — didn’t feel impossible anymore. It felt inevitable.

That’s the beauty of reflection: it doesn’t just calm the mind, it opens it. It allows courage to rise gently, without forcing it. And when the quiet voice finally spoke, I answered: Why not now?

I tell you this not to impress or instruct. I tell you this because it feels like the kind of insight we all need to hear now and then: that life’s noise can soften, that our own voice can be heard, and that the leaps we dream about are often closer than we think.

So here’s my invitation: find your own shoreline, wherever that may be. Listen. Notice. And when the quiet voice nudges you — even just a little — answer it. Sometimes the smallest leap opens the entire horizon. Stay tuned to see where my leap landed me…..

Until next time, may a small wave of inspiration find you.
